Center for Student Educational Success

You’ve made it to Iowa State University—we’re glad you’re here! The Center for Student Educational Success is designed for students like you who are first-generation and/or low-income to have a place to ask questions, address issues that may arise, and gain the skills to help you reach your personal and educational goals. We want you to feel comfortable and welcome to access resources available to you such as connecting with staff and mentors, attending events with students who are also low-income and/or first-generation and understand life at Iowa State.

    Our Mission

The mission of the Center for Student Educational Success (CSES) at Iowa State University is to empower first-generation and low-income students to reach their full academic and career readiness potential. Through academic and personal support services, mentorship, financial support, and assistance for family members in understanding and navigating their student’s college experience, the center equips students with the tools and support needed to not only persist academically, but also thrive on campus and beyond the college experience. The Center's work aligns with the values and mission of the University and the Division of Student Affairs, emphasizing the importance of serving all students and ensuring their overall well-being and student success.

A first-generation college student means that your parents did not complete a 4-year college or university degree, regardless of other family member’s level of education.

The term "low-income eligible" often applies to students who are Pell-Eligible (as indicated as a result of their processes FAFSA). Another indicator would be an individual whose family's taxable income for the preceding year (2023) did not exceed 150% of the poverty level amount.

If a student is unsure of their classification as first-generation or low-income eligible, please reach out by visiting the Dean of Students Office on the 1st floor of the Student Services Building or emailing firstscholars@iastate.edu. The team is here to help all students determine what classifications align with your personal status.

The First Scholars Pathways to Success Program (PTS) is a comprehensive initiative designed to support all facets of the student experience, ensuring that every student has the resources and opportunities needed to thrive academically, personally, and professionally.
